To reduce the number of living animals in the ld50 toxicity test, 1983

Submitted by: The Animal Welfare Special Committee

The National Council of Women in Conference assembled, in view of the fact that the LD50 Toxicity Test is now recognized by many scientists to be cruel, wasteful and of limited value, urges Her Majesty’s Government to set up an independent, scientific enquiry in order to determine: (a) how the number of living animals used in this test can be reduced without jeopardising its value; (b) whether alternatives to living animals can be employed in certain tests where at present the LD50 Toxicity Test is obligatory and to make recommendations.
