NCWGB’s trustee Alison attended Centenary Action’s meeting last week to hear about what is being done or can be done to protect candidates in UK elections. These discussions included the upcoming election bill, how minoritised women are facing challenges getting on ballot papers at a local level and what protection can be offered to candidates including how the Online Safety Act could be used.

Speakers were:

Jess Garner (Electoral Reform Society) who provided some details on the upcoming Elections Bill.

Professor Khursheed Wadia (Co-Director, Centre for the Study of Women and Gender, University of Warwick) shared her recent report for the Muslim Women’s Network.

Hannah Phillips gave an update on the Jo Cox Civility Commission.

Maeve Walsh and Professor Emeritus Lorna Woods OBE from the Online Safety Act Network talked about how online protections for participants in the democratic process are long overdue.
