Associate Professor Shweta Singh, management committee member, and Ann Davison, President of National Council of Women GB, attended a really effective roundtable in Parliament last Thursday organised by the inspirational Jess Asato MP.
There was so much expertise in the room, and so much passion for protecting women and children online!
These were NCWGB’s key takeaways:
What is illegal offline should be illegal online – for example harm to the person
Freedom of expression does not include encouraging or inspiring violence
Define platforms as products so that safety by design is required
Algorithms which encourage rage, aggression and disinformation are a risk for democracy undermining trust.
Threats to women seek to remove us from online debate
Ann Davison said, ‘It is the duty of governments to keep their citizens safe, the duty of all of us to safeguard children. Unsafe products and services aren’t allowed offline. Why is the online environment excused?’
