The United Nations is operating on tighter budgets and is seeking efficiencies. As part of this UN 80 initiative the Secretary General has proposed merging the entity which work for the needs and rights of women, UN Women, to be merged with the United Nations Population Fund.
NCWGB, along with the International Council of Women and sister women’s organisations, strongly asserts the continuing need for a standalone entity devoted to women. We are happy to see reforms and efficiencies which retain its independence.
The challenges women face in the world today go way beyond the reproductive issues covered by UNPF. Continuing to give women’s human rights a high profile is an essential part of maintaining a humanitarian, rules based order with equality at its heart.
