National Council of Women GB was honoured that the inspirational Jess Asato MP hosted a roundtable on AI safety by design for us and UKAI on Wednesday.
We were delighted also to welcome the minister for AI, Kanishka Narayan, who came to meet attendees and received a report on AI and young people from the chair of NCWGB’s study group on digital safety Professor Shweta Singh.
NCWGB members Sarah Wyer, Clare Roberts and Lauren Bull spoke evidencing the current bias against women and girls in AI, calling for a robust response internationally to the tech industry and citing the harms to children seen by teachers and the medical profession.
The government was acting at pace but the overall solution to AI risks, bias and harms was seen to be safety by design so that digital products and services were properly tested and assessed before release onto the market.
Enforcement needed to go beyond fines speakers suggested, and a levy on the industry should pay for ethical oversight.
