On April 13th 2022 we held a conference in Derby for sixth formers leaders in schools. The day started with refreshments and chat. We noticed a lot of networking going on, with discussions about exams and university. It was really lovely, meeting in person.
Some of our Network 18-25 organised and ran the first session of the day, to develop leadership skills which could then be used to lead groups in school. The session was on the Sustainable Development Goals, with a particular focus on health and poverty and their effect on girls and women.
Everyone took an active part, speaking confidently and telling us all about particular things that had sparked their interest. These topics ranged from period poverty to the menopause and the gender pay gap, domestic violence and mental health issues. We also spoke about NCW aims and the 3 Cs. It was a worthwhile day with positive feedback received, and the young women went away full of ideas and motivation. NCW must harness this enthusiasm and maintain contact with these individuals as they continue through school and not lose contact with those about to start university or work.
