NCW in Conference assembled (i) recalling the Agenda 21 Action Plan on environment and development issues, drawn up at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, and bearing in mind subsequent developments in New York at the ‘Rio Plus 5’ Conference held in June 1997; (ii) concerned that there continues to be a lack of support for this global agenda for the twenty-first century; (iii) noting that within Agenda 21, in the chapter headed ‘Women in Sustainable Development’, great emphasis is placed on the vital role women can play in the years ahead, calls upon HMG to ensure: (a) that the challenges of Agenda 21 are widely understood and met; and (b) that the Platform for Action provisions regarding women and the environment – as agreed at the 4th UN Conference on Women in Beijing 1995 – are fully implemented.
