The National Council of Women in Conference assembled recognises the benefits to both women and their children of breastfeeding, supports the WHO/UNICEF global Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative aimed at raising breastfeeding rates around the world and in particular lends its support to the UK’s Baby Friendly Initiative, welcomes the partnership between the National Breastfeeding Working Group and the Baby Friendly Initiative; and calls upon Her Majesty’s Government to promote breastfeeding throughout the Health Service and society generally by: (a) ensuring that breastfeeding women, in hospital and in the home, are given full support by healthcare professionals; (b) encouraging local government, companies and organizations, with responsibility for areas of public access, to provide facilities for breastfeeding, thereby promoting its acceptance.
