Fair trade, 2001

Submitted by:  The National Board of Catholic Women

The National Council of Women: urges Her Majesty’s Government to increase its efforts to: (a) reform the structures and practices of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) so that free trade becomes fair trade, helping poorer countries to move towards sustainable development; (b) press the WTO and the EU to encourage capacity building for developing countries to enable them to participate fully in WTO negotiations and take advantage of existing trade preferences; (c) support and encourage organisations which work at grass roots level to get fairly traded goods into shops and supermarkets.
