Guardianship of infants, 1963

The National Council of Women in Conference assembled deprecates the limited value of the legal rights that a mother has over the legitimate children resulting from the common law rule that the father is the guardian of his children and the restricted scope of the Guardianship of Infants Act 1925.  The Council is strongly of the opinion that the law should be amended to confer on the mother equal rights with the father as to the guardianship of their children, and urges Her Majesty’s Government to give priority to such legislation which, with the changed status of the married woman, is much overdue.
