Increase in population/development aid, 1992

Submitted by: The Birth Control Trust

The National Council of Women in Conference assembled recognises that the world’s population currently exceeds 5 billion, is growing by 250,000 per day, and is expected to exceed 6 billion by the year 2000; believes: (i) that the high rates of population growth undermine hard-won stability and sustainable development; (ii) that, through the United Nations and other appropriate bodies, relevant health, education and environmental strategies will improve women’s status and their full participation in local and national development efforts; and calls upon Her Majesty’s Government to quadruple its population and family planning projects assistance within the overseas development aid budget to 4% of the total by the year 2000; with the proviso that such aid allows a free choice based on full information and does not result in a government-imposed programme.
