The National Council of Women in Conference assembled notes that it is the stated intention of the Secretary of State for Health and both Regional and District Health Purchasing Authorities increasingly to move the care of patients from hospital to their own homes, particularly through the further implementation of day surgery, believes this will only be in the best interest of patients if there is adequate support for them in their own homes from community care agencies on and from the day of discharge; calls upon Her Majesty’s Government to see that such support is in place before the number of hospital beds is reduced, by ensuring that the budget for the Community Units is in proportion to the number of people who need the services and that sufficient money is provided to set up these services before the changes take place.
