Poverty and child welfare, 2013

Submitted by: NCW Management Committee

NCW in Conference assembled, AWAREof the recent Government Consultation Paper on measures affecting child poverty and citing certain damaging aspects of poverty in childhood, including unmanageable debt, and the effects of poor housing, urges HerMajesty’s Government to take measures with the appropriate authorities to curb: (a)  the high, often exorbitant, rates of interest charged by some loan companies, which do not permit parents to escape from the poverty trap; and (b) the activities of landlords offering accommodation to the public, which is classified as damp, sub-standard and generally not fit for purpose, and which can seriously damage the health and welfare of families with young children.
