Schools in problem areas, 1965

Submitted by: The Education Sectional Committee

The National Council of Women of Great Britain in Conference assembled considers that it is of vital importance not to allow discussions about secondary re-orgainisation, or the serious shortage of teachers, or programmes for the expansion of higher education, to obscure the duty that lies on the whole community to give the schools in slums and problem areas (as described in the Newsom Report) a new deal; and urges the Secretary of State for Education and Science to institute at once an imaginative crash programme to give these schools better equipment both for in-school and out-of-school activities and a higher ratio of teacher to pupil.
