Shortage of teachers, 1967

Submitted by: Wrexham Branch

The National Council of Women of Great Britain in Conference assembled, keenly aware of the problem of the present shortage of teachers which will become more acute with the raising of the school-leaving age in 1970, urges the Department of Education and Science and the Secretary of State for Scotland to take immediate steps:

(i) to increase the provision of refresher courses for graduates and certificated teachers who might return as specialist teachers after an absence of years if such courses were widely available;

(ii) to provide in many more local centres teacher training courses for mature students with the understanding that such courses may need a flexible time-table;

(iii) to implement, as soon as possible, the declared intention of the Minister and the Secretary of State for Scotland to make part-time teaching service pensionable.
