In light of research, which shows that the hospital consultant unit is not necessarily the safest place of delivery for every woman, the National Council of Women in Conference assembled, urges the Secretary of State for Health to use his influence to halt the increasing trend towards closure of small, viable, local maternity units, as well as ensuring sufficient numbers of community midwives, so that women have a real choice of place of delivery, including birth at home.
